Mathematical Graphing Mastery

What is graphing?

Graphing builds on the fundamentals of mathematics. Topics like calculus, quadratics, polynomials and graphs and functions are built around the core concepts of graphing.

In Year 10, students are introduced to graphing and the algebraic laws governing it but only to a superficial level. Our course is designed to show how profound and important graphing principles can be, especially for prospective Mathematics Extension 1 and 2 students.

Desmos is a online graphing calculator that we will be using for this course. It is one of the most helpful tools teachers and students use in HSC Mathematics. All our students are expected to enter the Desmos global art competition: https://www.desmos.com/art.

A bit more about the course...

This course was inspired by our Mathematics Ext 2 Band 6 achiever, Kaustubh Patel.

In 2018, Kaustubh took part in the Cherrybrook Technology High School May Samali award where he had to showcase his academic excellence in a creative and expressive manner. His submission was a series of 43 mathematical equations that graphed the words "Aspire and Achieve" in his school Logo.

This can be viewed at https://www.desmos.com/calculator/qlwfgjquos and is also featured in the slideshow above.

However he had trouble graphing the CTHS logo due to a very complex section that eluded him, but in 2020, whilst working as a private tutor, Kaustubh finally realised how to graph that one section. He overcame the challenge and produced the final result: www.desmos.com/calculator/khwtp0r0t5 (also featured in the slideshow above).

Kaustubh lead to the development of this course once realising that the potential of graphing could jump start a students mathematical understanding.
